The BEC62(08) is a three-phase, four wire, STS compliant prepayment electricity meter ideal for residential, commercial and light industrial electricity metering applications.
The device is also termed a “split” meter, consisting of two items; the MCU (measurement control unit and the UIU (User interface unit). The MCU is installed outside the customer premises in a meter box or kiosk, while the UIU sits inside the customer premises.
The BEC62(08) solution provides a number of innovations, the split function serves as a great advantage to the utility as access to the meter is restricted, thereby reducing the chance of meter tamper. The unit also has a wide range of programmable functions, to provide a high level of customisation for each utility.

Page 6 - English - : BEC62 08 technical manual Rate LED red This LED has a dual function it indicates the rate of consumption and is also used to verify the accuracy of the meter The LED flashes faster to indicate a rapid consumption of electricity The LED pulses 1000 times for every kWh of energy measured Virtual token carrier VTC The BEC6208 meter supports two VTC interfaces Direct probe port type A This port is primarily used to extract data from an uninstalled meter using a handheld unit as it enables the interrogator unit to supply power to the meter The physical port is shared with the flags port therefore only one channel can be used at a time The flags port takes priority Flags probe port This port is primarily used to extract data from an installed meter using a handheld unit The physical port is shared with the direct probe interface therefore only one channel can be used at a time The flags port takes priority This port is optically isolated so you are protected and totally isolated from the mains supply This port only operates when the meter is powered You cannot power the meter through this interface

Page 12 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Installing the meter Installing the metering device MCU Important Before installing the meter take note of the following precautions The wiring must be performed by a certified installation electrician and must conform to the prevailing government standards and safety regulations This product is not a protection device and so requires the use of a suitable upstream and downstream breaker When wiring the meter ensure that the incoming supply is isolated by switching off the upstream breaker We recommend that if you are connecting aluminium cables to this product use bi metal lugs We recommend that the meter is installed in an enclosure with an IP54 rating or higher For installation of the UIU see Installing the User Interface Unit UIU section or refer to the installation guide shipped with the device Cabling specification Cable Size Live and Neutral Maximum 25mm Communication Maximum 07mm Single core recommended Tools and accessories required for the wall mounting installation 1 x 6mm insulated terminal screwdriver 1 x Insulated side cutters 1 x Electric drill 1 x Masonry drill bit Ø7mm 3 x wall plugs and screws Ø7mm x 30mm 8 x bimetal lugs if aluminium cables are used

Page 14 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Installing the user interface unit UIU 1 Place the wall mount bracket against the wall ensuring that the unit is level and that the communication cable can pass through the cable entry hole Figure 31A 2 Mark and drill 6mm holes for the two mounting holes and insert the wall plugs Figure 31B 3 Pull the communication cable through the cable entry hole Ensure that no more than 100mm of cable is protruding 4 Insert and tighten all screws ensuring the base is securely fastened in position and is not twisted or distorted 5 Cut and strip the ends of the communication cable To ensure a good connection we recommend that at least 15mm of cable is stripped 6 Connect the communication wires for the UIU by pushing back on the orange clips and inserting the wires Figure 32A 7 Curl up the surplus communication cable ensuring that it does not get damaged when securing the unit to the bracket 8 Slide and clip the unit onto the base Figure 33A 9 Insert and tighten all screws ensuring that the unit is securely fastened in position Figure 33 B Figure 31 UIU base view Mounting bracket holes Communication cable entry point

Page 16 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Installing a wireless solution The BEC6208 can be converted into a wireless meter through the addition of a Wireless Meter Interface WMI which enables RF communication from the meter to the Wireless User Interface Unit wUIU It is important to note that the wireless solution requires a wUIU to be installed in the consumers home To install the wireless meter interface WMI The WMI is installed close to the meter to enable RF communication The WMI can be installed on a pole with cable ties or within a pole top box on a DIN rail When installed in an unobstructed environment a distance of up to 150 metres line of sight can be achieved between the two devices Once positioned the communication cables from the WMI are connected onto the meter terminals 12 and 13 by pushing back the orange clips The terminals are not polarity sensitive See Figure 2 Wiring instructions Installing the wUIU Important The wUIU can be used with the 09 series meters as well as wirelessenabled 05 or 08 generation meters 1 Place the wall mount bracket against the wall ensuring that the unit is level Figure 41 2 Mark and drill 6mm holes for the two mounting holes and insert the wall plugs Insert and tighten all screws ensuring that the unit is securely fastened in position and that the unit is not twisted or distorted 3 Insert the batteries into the back of the wUIU and secure the cover with the supplied screws Figure 42 4 Slide and clip the unit onto the base Figure 43

Page 19 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Repairing the wUIU with a meter Initiate a new pairing by entering 036 You will see the following display Enter the 11 digit meter serial number As you enter the digits the display will scroll to the left When all digits have been entered the wUIU starts communications If the pairing with the meter is successful the following will be displayed the meter will then return to its default screen If the pairing with the meter is unsuccessful or the incorrect serial number is entered the connection process will fail and abort Following a successful pairing the display will show the default meter information Checking the wUIU signal To check the RF signal strength enter the short code 075 This will display the signal strength for 30 seconds To abort the command hold down the backspace or hash key for three seconds The signal strength is displayed on the bar graph This shows signal strength of 80
Page 20 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Installing and pairing the wUIU to a wireless extender WEX In some installations it may be necessary to increase the signal between the wUIU and the meter This is achieved by installing a Wireless Extender WEX between the meter and the wUIU to ensure consistent communication between the devices It is recommended that the distance between the WEX and the meter should not exceed 20 metres The WEX can be mounted on an exterior wall or light pole and the device is powered via the mains source 220240V Once connected the WEX can increase the signal to the wUIU to some 200 metres line of sight Following installation it is necessary to pair the WEX Previously unpaired wUIU A previously unpaired wUIU will show the following display once powered Enter the serial number of the WEX As you enter the digits the display will scroll to the left When all 11 digits of the WEX serial number have been entered you will again see the following display Enter the 11 digit meter serial number As you enter the digits the display will scroll to the left When all digits have been entered the WEX starts communications If the pairing with the WEX is successful the following will be displayed If the pairing with the WEX is unsuccessful the following will be displayed Check and confirm the WEX serial number

Page 22 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual If the pairing with the WEX is successful the following will be displayed If the pairing with the WEX is unsuccessful the following will be displayed Check and confirm the WEX serial number Immediately after the successful pairing this display will be momentarily viewed If the pairing with the meter is successful the following will be displayed the meter will then return to its default screen The following screen indicates the pairing was not successful this may be due to a range problem or a loss of power Following a successful pairing the display will show the default meter information Testing the meter installation and sealing the device 1 Fit the terminal cover taking care not to damage the tamper switch post Tighten the piston head screws of the terminal cover Do not fit the security seals 2 Before testing the installation ensure that the UIU has been installed and connected 3 Apply power to the meter by closing the upstream breaker 4 The communication LED yellow will flash indicating that there is communication between the meter and the UIU and the UIU will display the available credit 5 The load status LED green will indicate the status of the consumers supply If the LED is on then the consumer supply is connected If flashing the consumers supply is disconnected 6 In some cases the meter may require a commissioning token to connect the consumers supply Refer to Checking if the meter is commissioned to determine whether the meter requires commissioning If the meter requires commissioning refer below to Commissioning the meter
Page 23 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual 7 Confirm that the serial number printed on the meter barcode label and the identification card is correct by typing 100 on the UIU and comparing these 8 If the meter is working correctly insert the supplied security seals Commissioning the meter Important If the meter is has not been commissioned the consumers electricity supply remains disconnected regardless of the credit state of the meter The commissioning token number is 1275 4194 1448 6450 5970 and is not meter specific and therefore can be used on all Conlog STS meters Alternatively the short code 043 can be used for wireless installations The decision to configure a meter with the commissioning function is made when the meter order is placed and the meter is manufactured at Conlog The benefit of an uncommissioned meter is that you can conclude the installation and apply the incoming electricity supply without the meter going into a tamper state This means you do not need to carry meter specific tamper tokens and wont experience unnecessary delays in concluding an installation After you have verified the installation as described in the Testing the meter installation and sealing the device section enter the commissioning token or short code on the UIUs keypad Once this is entered tamper detection is active and the consumers electricity supply is connected Checking if the meter is commissioned Short code 031 If the meter is supplied in a commissioned state it will detect tamper as soon as the electricity supply is connected If it is supplied in an uncommissioned state it will not detect tamper until the meter is commissioned To determine if the meter has been commissioned Enter 031 on the keypad Meter has been commissioned Meter has not been commissioned
Page 24 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Features of the meter Security There is provision for serialised security seals in combination with sacrificial plastic seals The meter is completely sealed to prevent tampering Tamper can be detected even if supply is disconnected optional The user Interface incorporates a shortcut key to display the number of tamper conditions detected The meter has an internal register of correctly entered meter specific tokens to prohibit the replaying of tokens Each meter has a unique meter security key The terminal cover has a tamper detection feature The meter can be commissioned at installation optional Reliability Conformalcoated PCBs ensure protection against the ingress of insects dust and humidity The UIU has a proven reliability of more than one million operations per key Pick and place technology using surface mounted components ensures a high degree of manufacturing accuracy repeatability and reliability The meter accuracy is maintained over the life of the meter Protection Each phase is protected by a 5kA 5kV surge arrestor The electronic circuits are designed to withstand 420VAC for up to 48 hours The meter is equipped with thermal protection on the terminals enhancing product safety and the meters life cycle The product is designed to suspend electricity supply under power and current overload conditions with a short time over current protection of 30kA and thermal protection The BEC6208 incorporates three 100A latching relays to connect disconnect the consumer supply The following features are employed as protection features for both the consumers appliances and the meter Power unbalanced power and current overloads The supply will be restored automatically 30 seconds after the trip event was registered If the trip event persists then the consumers supply will be disconnected again After 5 attempts to reconnect the consumers supply will be disconnected for 30 minutes Thermal over voltage and under voltage trips The supply will be restored when the trip condition no longer exists for a period of 15 seconds Under and over voltage measurement This setting is a trip threshold that suspends electricity supply when an under or over voltage condition exists The supply is suspended until the voltage conditions return to normal The trip threshold can be configured for both under and over voltage supply conditions The average voltage is calculated every fifteen seconds
Page 25 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Current measurement Current measured is calculated every 15 seconds and is derived from the average power and the average voltage measured per phase The derived current measurement is used for the over current trip evaluation Temperature measurement The average temperature is calculated every 15 seconds from the samples accumulated and is used for the over temperature trip evaluations Temperature is measured on all phases individually including neutral Nominal voltage measurement The average voltage per phase is measured every 15 seconds from the samples accumulated This value is used for t under and over voltage trip evaluations Power overload Short code 007 If the instantaneous power measured by the meter is higher that the power load limit setting then the meter will disconnect the consumers supply The trip limit can be changed through the use of a meter specific token from a vending unit The power load limit is displayed in kilowatts kW Phase unbalance power overload Short code 010 If the instantaneous power measured between any of the three phases by the meter is higher that the unbalanced power load limit setting then the meter will disconnect the consumers supply The display indicates a maximum phase unbalance limit of 23 kW Thermal overload If the temperature of the busbars on any of the phases including neutral measured by the meter rises above a maximum temperature trip limit default of 120C the meter will disconnect the consumers supply The supply will remain disconnected until such time as the temperature has dropped below a reconnect temperature trip limit of 105C The maximum temperature trip limit is configurable and cannot be set to lower than 55C A value of lower than 55C will be ignored and a trip limit of 55C will be set The maximum temperature trip limit is not configurable and is used to protect the meter
Page 26 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Over voltage and under voltage Short code 035 This short code displays the under and over voltage limits Under voltage If the average supply voltage measured on any phase by the meter is less than the minimum voltage trip limit the meter will disconnect the consumers supply The supply will remain disconnected until such time as the supply voltage rises above this setting The minimum voltage trip limit is configurable in production and the feature can be disabled by setting the limit to 0VAC Over voltage If the average supply voltage on any phase measured by the meter is higher than the maximum voltage limit the meter disconnects the consumers supply The electricity supply remains disconnected until the voltage drops below this limit The default maximum voltage trip limit is configurable if this value is set to the maximum value example 420VAC the feature will be disabled Menu item 1 indicated by the bar graph displays the under voltage threshold limit Menu item 2 indicated by the bar graph displays indicates the over voltage threshold limit
Page 27 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Current overload Short code 037 If the current measured by the meter is higher than the maximum current limit setting then the meter will disconnect the consumers supply The maximum current limit setting is derived from the power load limit and the nominal voltage of the meter configured in production The current overload trip limit is displayed in amperes A Extreme current overload In extreme short term current overload conditions the consumer supply will not be disconnected This is to protect the disconnect device from damage Tamper The BEC6208 meter has optional tamper protection that is configured in production If the tamper feature is enabled any attempt to tamper with the meter can result in the consumers supply being disconnected if so configured The supply is only reconnected when a STS clear tamper token is entered into the meter The STS clear tamper token is meter specific When enabled tamper is only active once the meter is commissioned For information on commissioning the meter see the Commissioning the meter section The meter supports two primary modes for tamper detection Standard tamper activates a tamper condition when the meter is powered No power tamper the meter will detect a tamper condition even in the absence of an AC supply The meter is shipped in a decommissioned state to facilitate installation In this mode the tamper feature is disabled to allow the installer to fit and remove the terminal cover without the unit going into tamper Once installation is complete the installer commissions the meter The nopower tamper feature is active and any subsequent removal of the terminal cover with or without the AC supply will result in the meter registering a tamper condition Other configuration options Do not display tamper status if selected the meter does not display the tamper icons when an active tamper condition is detected Do not trip on tamper if selected the meter will record the tamper event but will not disconnect the supply

Page 29 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual General icon indications Low credit indication When the remaining credit in the meter reaches or is lower than the configurable low credit threshold the buzzer will emit two short beeps The audible warning will repeat until silenced by the consumer Silencing the buzzer is achieved by pressing the backspace key for three seconds If credit is not inserted then the audible low credit warning although acknowledged will be repeated approximately every 24 hours Should the UIU power up into a low credit condition the audible warning will restart The hand icon token required will flash indicating that a credit token is needed Zero credit indication When the available credit reaches zero the disconnection switch suspends the supply of electricity to the consumer The token required icon will be permanently displayed Negative credit indication Important When credit is entered into the meter the negative credit value is first deducted from the credit entered and only the balance will be displayed Under certain circumstances eg through switching delays or disconnection switch failure the consumer may continue consuming power after all remaining credit has been consumed This consumption is registered in the meter as negative credit and is displayed as a negative reading alternatively the meter can be configured at the time of manufacture so that the display continues to indicate 000 kWh whilst the meter registers the negative credit The token required icon continues to be displayed and the supply status icon is not displayed An example of a negative credit display is given below

Page 31 - English - : BEC6208 technical manual Accessing information on the meter using short codes To access information on the meter short codes are used These enable you to extract information from the meter without using specialised equipment The short codes are a sequence of three numeric digits bound by two hash commands that you enter on the meter using the keypad example 003 When you enter a short code you do not need to include the preceding zeros For example instead of entering 041 or 002 you can use 41 and 2 When a short code returns more than a single item of information you can scroll to view more information using the hash key When you scroll the segments of the bar indicator represent the menu item you are viewing So one segment in the bar indicates menu item 1 two segments in the bar indicate menu item 2 and so on To return to the default display when you are viewing additional information press the backspace key Example This example shows the meter total to date and the user total to date respectively Menu item 1 displays the meter total to date As shown in this image the bar indicator has one segment displayed indicating menu item 1 Menu item 2 displays the user total to date As shown in this image the bar indicator has two segments indicating menu item 2 For a quick reference of all short codes see the Short codes index section Entering a short code To enter a short code 1 Press on the keypad 2 Enter the required short code 3 Press The requested information is displayed 4 Press to scroll through the information displayed when a short code returns more than a single item of information The segments of the bar indicator represent the menu item you are viewing
